Our first full year has flown by and what a journey it’s been…

2018 began with The Mud!  Those of us who walked through the dark months that heralded the start of the year will recall the never-ending sludge, muddy boots, damp socks and need for gaiters.  But we also were rewarded with wonderful wintery vistas, huge skies, frosty scenes and the ‘in it together’ mentality to brace up to the weather, however chilly / wet / grey / windy it was. And it was all those elements!   We banished those January blues and embraced the endorphin rush of exercising when everyone else was fugging up indoors with colds and coughs.  Smugness rules…We’re a tough lot!

After the Beast from the East, the bluebells came out to endorse the power of PURPLE  and reward us with swathes of colour, carpeting all our favourite walks.  The countryside woke up and came alive – rewarding us with drier walks – in new locations.  Saturday Adventure walks took us far and wide across Norfolk – and what better way to celebrate living in our diverse county than striding out with poles (especially if there’s a pub at the end of the route!).

The long hot summer though was utterly energy sapping but that didn’t stop us.  Our lush green land was soon transformed into a parched savannah, so talk on the walks was of hydration belts versus back packs.  At times the poles could not plant in the ground behind as it was too hard.

On one of the hottest days of the summer, we hosted Nordic Walking Tameside for an 8.5 miler from Sheringham to Cley.  Brilliant walk, views up the coast for miles, and simply great to share one of our fave walks with another Nordic walking group.  They were blown away by our coastline (and admitted that Norfolk is NOT FLAT!!) .  Re-match in 2019 up in Tameside.  Watch this space….

Twelve of you took part in the North Norfolk Coastal Half Marathon in September.  You toughed it out, training in that insane heat and gritted your teeth to tackle and conquer the distances in the hottest of conditions.  Blisters, nutrition, hydration, footwear, underwear and mph were all talks on the preparation walks.  By the big day, we were Ready For Anything and loved every minute of the route. (It was such a brilliant success we are doing another Half Marathon in February with Positive Steps along the Marriott’s Way – join us if there are still places…)

Although it’s fun exploring new routes every Saturday and taking on new challenges, one of the most important parts of our outdoor fitness club are our regular weekly walks. We now run 14 of these each week in places that are always special whatever the weather.  We offer fast Workout Walks, Adventure Walks and gentler Wellbeing Walks, and whether you are coming straight from the office to join the Broadland Energiser or enjoy a slice of National Trust magic at Blickling Hall, we LOVE our venues and feel blessed to have such choice on our backdoor step.

Big thanks and welcome to John for coming onboard in December as a Walk Leader.  He will be leading 2 – 3 walks each month giving me more time to study my OS Maps and plot / recce new adventures for us all.

So that’s about it for 2018.  But the biggest thanks goes to you, the most fabulous amazing group of walkers on the planet, for your support, friendliness and good humour throughout the year.   It’s been amazing to see our Norfolk Nordic Walking Club grow, not just in numbers but in camaraderie, banter and spirit.  There definitely will be more socials next year – may the good times roll…

Looking forward to LOTS more walking adventures in 2019 with you – keeping fit whilst having lots of fun!

Seasons Greetings and Very Best Wishes,
