NORFOLK NORDIC WALKING NEWS
NEW YEAR – NEW YOU! PAM’S INSPIRATIONAL WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY…
Since Julius Caesar ruled that New Year began on January 1 in 46BC, and urged subjects to commit to personal improvement, resolutions have been synonymous with the turning of the year. After the overindulgences of Christmas, cutting down on food and drink, or vowing to exercise more, may seem like a welcome antidote to the excesses of the party season.
Yet research has shown that around one quarter of people give up their resolutions after just one week, while fewer than one in 10 will maintain their goal to the end of the year. There are key reasons for this and ways to prevent it which we will look at later, however first – over to Norfolk Nordic Walker, Pam. Just over a year ago she resolved to lose weight, and boy, has she stuck to her guns and done it! In fact, since taking up Nordic Walking with us she has lost nearly eight stone. Here is her story in her own words:
PAM’S STORY: HOW NORDIC WALKING HELPED ME LOSE NEARLY EIGHT STONE
“Following a routine appointment with a nurse at my local surgery, I was told a few home truths about being overweight (nothing I didn’t know already), however, the way in which I was told was really quite hurtful. This was the push I needed to make me seriously think about how to make some changes to my lifestyle. I needed to think consciously about what I was eating, also drinking (the wine would have to go), start planning a bit more etc etc. I was offered a referral to Slimming World which I accepted. So this was the start…
Having decided that the answer was not just a diet alone, some regular exercise would be needed, but what to choose? Being overweight, I couldn’t face going to the gym! Around the same time, there were some free Norfolk Nordic Walking sessions being organised by our Aviva Wellbeing group at work. I thought this could be it, a good way to incorporate some regular exercise, so signed up. Anyone can walk, right? Well, as it turns out, there is a bit of a technique to master, but in the capable hands of our instructor, Rebecca Wheatley, I soon had my ‘NWUK Passport’ and was on my way.
Just over a year ago when I started, I was the one always at the back huffing and puffing, trying to keep up with the others. What a difference a year makes, now it’s a different story. I can’t believe how much my fitness has improved over the year. Some niggling hip pain from osteoarthritis is now non-existent. I am no longer at the back of the group, actually nearer the front. I have bags more energy, so much so, I have joined the Norfolk Nordic Walking Team to compete in the 2020 Marriott’s Way Half Marathon in February, being nearly eight stone lighter!
Rebecca runs two workout sessions a week up at Broadland Business Park which I regularly attend (shifts allowing). As these sessions take place straight after work, I just love the convenience of it. I can get straight out of the office after a stressful day at work and we soon get walking at a brisk pace to blow away the cobwebs. The hour flies by.
I cannot recommend this form of exercise enough. It has helped me immensely over the past year. If you don’t know what to do to get a bit more active, please try this. You will be welcomed into a friendly group of like minded people of mixed ability and I’m sure you’ll fit right in.”
FEELING INSPIRED? OUR TOP TIPS TO MAKE IT HAPPEN
Pam’s journey is inspirational. Rest assured, not only will she ace her (first) Half Marathon and she will also be keeping the pace out front! At Norfolk Nordic Walking, we want YOU to achieve your fitness goals so you will have a spring in your step, feel brilliant and have ooodles of energy. PLUS, we want to make it fun too! Here are our TOP TIPS to be like Pam, and Make It Happen.
Make one change at a time
It’s easy to start off the New Year full of “I’m going to…” and grand plans, but starting small will give you a greater chance of success. Instead of planning an unrealistic workout schedule, aim to book at least ONE regular Nordic Walk once a week and keep that date in your diary. As you succeed with these small steps, this will become a habit and will soon become a routine that you can build on as you add new goals. Then, you progress to TWO + a week and go from there. Small acorns….!
Don’t go it alone
Much research has shown that social interaction makes people more likely to work out. Instead of going it alone, us Nordic Walkers like to exercise together – in all weather conditions. We motivate each other to turn up in sleeting rain, we share a sense of ‘in it together’ and it’s great fun too! The social aspect will help keep you going, and you’ll be less likely to bail on your plans to exercise.
Make it fun
Exercise doesn’t have to be drudgery. We want to Find Our Happy, not feel miserable and thus try to avoid doing it at all costs. If you don’t dread it, you’ll be more likely to keep going. PROVEN FACT: You hear Norfolk Nordic Walkers before you see them. (Noisy crowd!)
Book it in & COMMIT to it
Rainy day outside? It may be tempting to stay indoors right? Not if you have booked ahead as then you are committed. Waiting until the day itself to see what the weather brings (especially in the wintery months) and then book a walk is a surefire way to possibly finding yourself on the Waiting List as you left it too late. Being pre-planned will keep you on track PLUS at the end of the hour, you’ll feel Zinging and Fabulous.
Nordic walking burns 20-45% more calories, works the whole body, is sociable, and lessens impact on joints. It’s suitable for everyone and a fantastic fun way to enjoy being outside! The session lasts roughly 45 minutes. Please book your place if you are keen to attend. Booking is essential at https://norfolknordicwalking.co.uk/find-a-taster/ on our Norfolk Nordic Walking website.
