BENCHMARKING YOUR FITNESS – WAITING LIST BLUES – LOOKING AND BOOKING AHEAD
GETTING FITTER, FASTER, LEANER AND TRIMMER…
I am constantly impressed by the fitness gains of our walkers. New walkers most usually find themselves somewhere near the back of the group on their first walks and often comment on the speediness of those powering up ahead. (Fear not, with the whistle / loop back strategy, we aim to remain as one group as long as you choose the right walk for you!) But after just a few weeks of consistent walking and technique advice there’s a marked change. Both speed and stamina improve, often dramatically. The reason is multi-faceted:
- Heart and lungs are working more efficiently (improved posture plays a big part here);
- Technique is improving;
- Muscles are strengthening;
- Confidence is increasing.
It’s sometimes not easy to see these improvements yourself so benchmarking your fitness is worthwhile and something we highly recommend. It’s relevant for both the beginner and the seasoned Nordic walker.
One of the easiest ways to do this is to notice the mileage we cover in our walks and the time it takes. People often notice how routes seem ‘shorter’ and they get faster. How about timing yourself on a known route each month and recording your time. Remember, the only person you are competing with is… yourself!
You can use a GPS app on your smart phone (such as Map My Walk), a fitbit, apple watch or anything else that gives you a measure of distance and time if you want to re-create this test yourself.
A few of you have noticed that when you have booked your favourite walk, you have found yourself on the Waiting / Reserve List. Yes indeed some walks can get booked up to the max of 15 and that’s the cut off.
We have a lively and lovely community of walkers who now have truly got the Nordic Bug and need their fix on a regular basis.
Walks which end in a cafe / pub always are highly popular!
We walk in amazing locations!
Become a Monthly Member. For just £24 a month you can book unlimited walks in advance.
Plan ahead where possible. Find the walks which fit into your schedule and book ‘em. Walks are now on the Norfolk Nordic Walking right up to … April 2020.
If you are booked on a walk and cannot make it, please please please cancel EARLY. That way, if there are people on the Waiting List they can join the walk and know about it in advance. Nobody likes to be last minute dot com!
Whilst we do understand that sometimes it is not possible to make a class or walk – 24 hours notice is much appreciated.
SPREADING THE WORD – WE’RE ON THE NATIONAL TRUST WEBSITE!
I am delighted to say the lovely team at Blickling Hall Outdoor Events have been in touch to ask if we would like to feature in their ‘What’s On’ page of their website. Rude to say no! We will also be offering a FREE Nordic Walking Taster Walk on the last Wednesday of each month there. (Book via Norfolk Nordic Walking website) There have been lots of enquiries apparently from NT Members who see us out and about with our poles each week. Below is the link:
