NORFOLK NORDIC WALKING NEWS
2019 – HAPPY MEMORIES
Can you believe it? Here we are at the end of 2019 wondering where the year has gone? Well, for those of us who have been in the Norfolk Nordic Zone – it’s been another amazing, fun, energetic, adventurous year for our outdoor fitness club. We hope that you enjoy this little trip down memory lane as we recap on (just some) of the highlights…
We began the year embracing Winter Walks! Us regular Nordic’ers know the HUGE health benefits to be gained from getting wrapped up and braving the elements, but also the sense of camaraderie is infectious on those ‘challenging’ walks. It may seem grey, drizzly, chilly and ‘driech’ outside, but it sure beats the central heating malaise of staying indoors with cabin fever. Signing up for an event, such as the February 2019 Marriott’s Way Half Marathon, really was a cool way to kickstart the year. Joining our varied location Saturday walks and upping the mileage week on week was just the tonic after the excesses of Christmas. We loved it so much, we’re doing it again in February 2020…
After the darker months came Spring. Glorious, colourful and zinging with fresh life and new possibilities. The once muddy wintery paths became drier and less slippery underfoot, and talk turned from gaiters, waterproofs and keeping feet dry to the appreciation of nature – flora and fauna never looked so good. From bluebell woodlands to yellow rapeseed fields, our Norfolk Nordic Walking locations took us to the top spots.
The NEW LOOK! purple Norfolk Nordic Walking t-shirts certainly clocked up plenty of mileage this past year, not just on our UK walks, but also further afield! From Tokyo to Machu Picchu – and plenty of European hotspots en route too – they literally kept popping up all over the globe! Where will yours take you next year…?
Alongside our regular busy Weekly Schedule, summer walking took us from sprawling country estates to hidden tracks across the Norfolk Broads, down ancient Roman roads and through bygone sleepy villages. In 2019 we explored: Mannington, Cromer, Woolterton, Felbrigg, Keswick, Coltishall, the Marriott’s Way, Themelthorpe, Winterton, Brancaster, Blakeney, Foxley, Potter Heigham Marshes, Horsey, Weybourne, The Pulhams, Bure Valley Railway, the Boudicca Way, North Burlingham, South Repps, Buxton, Bramerton, Surlingham, Ranworth, The Burnhams, Cley…..to name BUT a few locations!
We sure have clocked up the s/miles – but also we have collaborated with fellow Nordic Walkers too. In 2019 we joined forces with Kevin Marshall and Nordic Walking Suffolk for a weekend of fabulous walking at Hunstanton. We have been joined by Nordic’ers from other NWUK Clubs (“Have NWUK Passport – will travel!“) and enjoyed joint walks with Mark Richardson and West Norfolk NW. For the second year we have also hosted Jane Lees and NW Tameside from Manchester, who simply cannot keep away from sunny Norfolk!
The buzz around Nordic Walking has really grown this year. Norfolk Nordic Walking now feature on the National Trust website (Tah Dah!), but also in 2019 it would seem everyone wanted a slice of the Nordic action! Even the in-flight Easy Jet magazine got a piece of the pie in its August edition…..
Whilst we embrace fitness – there’s so much MORE to belonging to Norfolk Nordic Walking than simply clocking up miles, feeling more trim, losing weight and feeling the wonderful benefits of the mind/body/soul balance that walking ‘in the Nordic zone’ gives you. There’s the social aspect too, which is soooo important to Feeling Good. For us, exercise + friendship = happiness so, social occasions are integral.
Autumn colours this year were absolutely beautiful. We all basked in the vibrancy of the season, admiring those rich orange hues in all our favourite venues. There’s something so utterly wholesome about walking across the countryside and soaking up the vistas – and with fine company to boot, it’s literally unbeatable!
Huge thanks to the lovely Norfolk Nordic Walking Team. John Davis has been a superstar this year, not only in his Walk Leader capacity but also in taking us on Guided City Tours around Norwich. These are always hugely popular events – historical, informative and with the added plus of a pub lunch too. Becky Sewell joined us in the summer and even on wet, dull and dark Tuesday evenings, the lights shone bright with her at the helm of the 6pm Step Up A Gear Walks (although for the purposes of the photo below, she turned her head torch off as it was too dazzling! TRUE!)
Christmas NEVER slips by quietly. John’s Guided Cathedral Close Tour + lunch, a magnificent 10 miler from Wells to Holkham with lunch midway, plenty of HO! HO! HO! at Blickling + lunch in The Bucks, AND more festive cheer on our Mulled Wine City Walk ensured December was busy, buzzy and lots of FUN. Plus there were all the usual weekly walks which kept us on track to stave off the mince pie bulge.
And finally, a HUGE thank you to all our lovely walkers for another incredible year. 2019 has flown by, packed full of very happy memories. We look forward to plenty more walking adventures in 2020. Where will your NWUK Passports take you? (HINT: Watch this space for … Loddon, Ludham, The Walpoles, North Elmham, Gressenhall, Walsingham, Castle Acre, Little London, Oxborough and Ickworth…the list could go on!)
Seasons Greetings to you all,
Owner / Instructor Norfolk Nordic Walking
